What Do Head Lice Look Like?

Updated: Mar 14, 2018

The first time you receive at text, email or letter from school alerting you that your son or daughter's class have cases of head lice, there are many emotions you may go through from "I can deal with that" to "there is no way I can deal with that".

Many mums just ask their children if they have an itchy head and if the much wanted answer is "no" there is a sigh of relief and no more is thought about it until a couple of months later when the infestation has really set in! The problem with diagnosing by itching is that only around 30% of the population are allergic to head lice bites. So more often than not, there is no itching.

The best thing to do is to use a comb, and comb the hair in sections. Try coming the wrong way, this will lift the hair from the scalp and you may see some lice crawling on the scalp. The other problem for looking for crawling lice, is that these little lice bugs can run quite fast (about 30cm a minute) which bearing in mind how small they are is a fair distance. They will also run away from bright lights, so try combing in natural sunlight if you can.

Head lice are easier to see in blonde hair as are the eggs, as seen in the below photo of live eggs and lice. For more information call 01442 3888779 or go to our services & prices page.
