Head Lice Disease?

Can you catch diseases from head lice?

If you are unfortunate enough to get head lice there will be many things that will concern you the first is that you will read that head lice is an infestation this is not to be confused with an infection.  It is infectious because it is transmitted by hair to hair contact, however serious illnesses do not occur because of head lice.

Although only approximately a third of people show early signs of itching, known as pruritus of the scalp, this alone can be very troublesome, cause stress and anxiety and because of discomfort can cause sleep deprevation.

A secondary infection from scratching the bites which get infected have been know to infect people  and can suffer from impetigo.and swollen lymph nodes  and other minor illnesses.

There is also after a period of as little as four months a condition that is called crusted lice where the skin when bitten does not flake away but embeds into the scalp causing

In research carried out on a female with an infestation of about four months, numerous lice eggs and head lice were found in the hair and she was suffering from crusted lice.  This case exemplifies dramatic presentation and the importance for physicians to adequately diagnose, treat and follow up to ensure successful resolution of head lice and prevent severe infestation.

The one thing we can say is that it is very rare indeed to pick up anything more than an itchy head, but dealing with a head lice infestation as soon as possible will ensure that it does not progress into something far more comfortable.  Head lice have not been found to cause serious illness or death.  They are also not connected to poor hygiene or neglect.
