Head Lice at the Hairdressers
Confessions Of A...Celebrity Hair Stylist
Will a hairdresser cut, dye or treat if you have head lice?
In the UK there are no regulations or guidelines to follow regarding finding a head lice infestation in a customers hair. Not only is it embarrassing for the customer with the head lice, it is also very difficult for a hairdresser to confront a customer with the news. Hopefully it will be dealt with in a discreet manner but unfortunately this is not always possible in a busy salon.
As there are no specific guidelines, the general action is that they will stop what they are doing if they find head lice crawling in the hair. If nits are present (empty shells) but no lice some hairdresser will cut, style etc.. But, of course they should be very vigilant and look for live lice eggs, which are far more difficult to spot. The lice egg is transparent and reflects the colour of the hair they are situated in.
It is always advisable to call the hairdressing salon you want to go to, to check if they will deal with your situation, to avoid any embarrassment.
Hairdresser are usually very good at cleaning their tools, brushes and combs between customers, but if for any reason you are worried that they are using brushes and combs that have visible hairs in them. Do not be embarrassed to ask for a clean brush as there could quite easily be lice or eggs in them and you could get an infestation yourself.
