What is a are head lice/nits?
A nit, or an “egg case” as it's sometimes called, looks like a small white pea with two black spots on its top end. It can be found at the base of your child's human scalp where his/her hair grows out. The eggs look similar but they're not quite so round. They have a hard shell which protects them until hatching time.
How you get head lice
You may pick up head lice through direct contact with an infected person’s head. They also spread easily between people via clothing, bedding and shared items such as hats, scarves and toys. There are lots of things you can do to prevent getting head lice. These include:
- Washing your hands regularly using soap and water
- Avoid sharing personal belongings like combs, brushes and towels
- Keeping your clothes clean and tidy
Preventing head lice
It's very difficult to prevent head lice. You may want to consider regular detection combing – for example, on a weekly basis – if you're concerned about your children or yourself.
Lotions and sprays don't prevent head lice and should only be used if a live louse has been found in your or your child's hair.
Staying off work or school and washing clothing and bedding on a hot wash is unnecessary, as it's unlikely to help prevent the spread of head lice.
